DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a policy implemented by the Obama Administration in 2012 that allows specific individuals who came to the United States as children and meet certain criteria to apply for two years of deferred action from deportation, as well as eligibility for a work permit. To be eligible for DACA, individuals must have arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16, must have continuously resided in the U.S. for at least five years before the policy's implementation, must be currently in school or have graduated from high school or obtained a GED, and must not have a criminal record.

The purpose of DACA is to provide a temporary solution for individuals who were brought to the U.S. as children, often referred to as "Dreamers," and who have known no other home. The policy is not a path to citizenship but rather a reprieve from deportation and the ability to work legally.

DACA has been a contentious issue, with some arguing that it is a necessary relief for individuals brought to the U.S. through no fault of their own. In contrast, others say it is an executive overreach and an amnesty for individuals who broke immigration laws.

In September 2017, the Trump Administration announced that it would phase out the DACA program and called on Congress to find a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers. Since then, several court cases have been filed, and several federal courts have ordered the Trump administration to continue the program. The situation is still ongoing, and the fate of DACA and its recipients is uncertain.
